I am a trained medical doctor in practice with an interest in sports medicine and specialization in the application of exercise among clinical populations. Upon graduated from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2016, I was posted to Sarawak General Hospital to serve with the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Did rotations in Orthopaedics, General Surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Family Medicine postings over 3 years in duration, with all-around excellent clinical skills alongside in-depth medical knowledge and sound overall patient management.
Due to my ever-active sporting background as athlete-cum-coach for Taekwondo and swimming at international and national levels respectively along with enthusiasm in traditional archery and equestrian, I have been given the opportunity by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) as the only Malaysian junior doctor to pursue the prestigious Diploma in Sports Medicine under the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the year 2018. It was a successful effort to boost my confidence in providing healthcare services via alternative/complementary means via inclusion of physical activity/exercise/sports as part of treatment for any patients alike. I was later awarded the title “IOC Diploma Sports Physician” (IOC Dip Sp Phy) at the end of the postgraduate diploma study in July 2020 at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Pursuing further my interest in exercise medicine, I enrolled in the Master of Science (Clinical Exercise Science) program under Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Through this MSc study, I delved into the roles of exercise physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, and psychology for their impact on lifestyle modifications towards better health and living qualities. MSc CES (USM) launches me inevitably into a full-fledged yet humane Exercise Physician capable of integrating conventional therapy with safe exercise prescription to maximize the overall treatment regime and living outcomes of any patients, come what may they be, in whatever conditions they are with.
Apart from Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM), I am also trained by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in the expertise of Occupational Medicine which requires me to screen workers fit to work, diagnose job-related/causing disorders, and clear the employees for return to work. It is my duty to be well-versed with the acts pertaining to OSH including SOCSO compensation eligibility whether it is due to employment injury or invalidity sustained by the workers.
With the increasing trend of non-communicable diseases locally and the current COVID-19 pandemic gripping the whole world, it is by virtue of my responsibility as a physician specializing in exercise prescription among clinical populations; from young kids to elderly, from obese people to cancer-stricken patients alike; to provide the most reasonably safest clinical judgment with up-to-date medical knowledge and national policy as eternally-inscribed through the Hippocratic Oath:
“I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according to my greatest ability and judgment, and I will do no harm or injustice to them. Now if I carry out this oath, and break it not, may I gain forever reputation among all men for my life and for my art; but if I break it and forswear myself, may the opposite befall me.”
